AutoGyro is a German company that specializes in the production of gyroplanes, a unique form of aviation that combines the stability of a fixed-wing aircraft with the agility of a helicopter. The company has been at the forefront of the gyroplane industry for over 20 years, and their commitment to innovation and quality has helped them become one of the most respected manufacturers in the field. Gyroplanes, also known as autogyros, are a type of rotorcraft that use a rotor to generate lift and a separate engine or motor to provide forward thrust. Unlike helicopters, which use the main rotor to provide both lift and thrust, gyroplanes use a free-spinning rotor that is not powered by the engine. This design allows gyroplanes to take off and land in much shorter distances than helicopters, and also gives them greater stability and maneuverability. AutoGyro produces a range of gyroplanes for both personal and commercial use. Their most popular model, the Calidus, is a two-seat aircraft that is designed for both recreational and training use. With a top speed of 120 mph and a range of over 500 miles, the Calidus is a versatile aircraft that is well-suited for a variety of applications. The Calidus is powered by a Rotax 914 engine, which provides 115 horsepower and allows the aircraft to climb at a rate of 1,500 feet per minute. The aircraft also features a modern cockpit with advanced avionics and instrumentation, making it easy to fly and navigate. The Calidus is available in both kit form and as a fully assembled aircraft, and AutoGyro offers comprehensive training and support to ensure that owners can operate and maintain their aircraft safely and effectively. In addition to the Calidus, AutoGyro also produces several other gyroplane models. The MTO Sport is a single-seat aircraft that is designed for recreational use, while the Cavalon is a larger, more powerful model that is ideal for commercial applications such as aerial surveying and photography. AutoGyro also produces a range of accessories and upgrades for their gyroplanes, including custom paint schemes, landing gear upgrades, and advanced avionics packages. One of the key advantages of gyroplanes over other types of aircraft is their safety. Unlike helicopters, which can experience dangerous rotor overspeed conditions, gyroplanes have a built-in safety feature called an autorotation. In an autorotation, the free-spinning rotor continues to rotate even if the engine fails, providing enough lift to allow the aircraft to land safely. This feature has helped gyroplanes earn a reputation as one of the safest forms of aviation, and has made them a popular choice for recreational pilots and aviation enthusiasts around the world. AutoGyro has a strong reputation for quality and innovation in the gyroplane industry. The company has invested heavily in research and development to ensure that their aircraft are safe, reliable, and easy to operate. They also offer comprehensive training and support to their customers, including flight training and maintenance courses. This commitment to excellence has helped AutoGyro become one of the most respected and successful gyroplane manufacturers in the world. Another advantage of gyroplanes is their versatility. Gyroplanes can be used for a wide range of applications, from recreational flying to commercial operations. They are well-suited for aerial surveying and photography, as well as search and rescue missions and other emergency services. Gyroplanes are also used in agriculture, where they can be used to spray crops and monitor crop growth. With their unique combination of stability, maneuverability, and safety, gyroplanes are an excellent choice for a variety of applications. AutoGyro is a leading manufacturer of gyroplanes that has earned a reputation for quality, safety, and innovation. Their commitment to excellence has helped them become one of the most respected and successful gyroplane manufacturers in the world, with a loyal customer base and a strong presence in the aviation industry. These systems make it easier and safer for pilots to fly their gyroplanes, and help reduce the risk of accidents and errors. AutoGyro's commitment to safety and reliability is also reflected in their manufacturing processes. All of their gyroplanes are built to strict quality standards and undergo rigorous testing before they are sold to customers. This ensures that each aircraft is safe, reliable, and performs at the highest level. Overall, AutoGyro is a company that is passionate about gyroplanes and committed to advancing the technology and capabilities of this unique form of aviation. Luciano Sorlini didn't just have Art as his passion. Since he was a boy he approached the world of flight by participating in model aircraft courses held by R.U.N.A (Royal National Aeronautical Union) thus building various model aircraft. He obtained the Flight Patent in 1952 and in 1956 he obtained, as the first non-professional civilian pilot in Italy, the instrumental flight qualification (this type of qualification allows, on suitably instrumented aircraft, to fly in the absence of visibility). He also participated in numerous air races including the Air Tour of Lombardy, the Esaveneto and the Tour of Sicily, always qualifying among the first. Many were the planes he flew over the years, including several historic planes His first aircraft was the “Macchino” or the Macchi MB308 which was followed by a Swedish Saab Safir 91C, an avant-garde aircraft for the time. In 1960 he suspended all flying activities to devote himself entirely to his new company. He will pick up again in 1980 by purchasing a Beechcraft Bonanza currently in the collection. It was in these years that he became passionate about the restoration of historic aircraft. Currently the planes, located in the hangars of Calvagese and Ceresara (Mantova), are owned by the daughter Silvia who, together with her husband Giovanni Marchi keeps them flying. Flying Museum: this is the title of the fascinating and unusual fly-in which took place on 2 June 2019 from 10 to sunset at the San Martino airfield in Ceresara (Mantova, Italy) in it’s last edition. A real museum flying in the skies, since rare and precious historical planes took part that will fly over the field. Spectators (by the way, admittance is free) were able to admire some of the aircraft that were owned by the Brescia entrepreneur Luciano Sorlini (1925-2015), a great passionate about flight. Also other planes and warbirds of considerable historical interest owned by their daughter Silvia Sorlini and her husband Giovanni were present as well as other historical planes The fly-in, in its fourth edition, was under the aegis of the Municipality of Ceresara, the MarteS Museum, Luciano Sorlini s.p.a. and collaborates with AOPA Italy. All the historic planes that will participate are airworthy. The public was able to see them lined up on the runway and in the air, since they landed and take off throughout the day. In addition, guided tours wereorganized together with their pilots and owners and will reveal stories, anecdotes and aircraft secrets. After many efforts, difficulties and unforeseen events, the hangar destined to house the Flying Museum is finally usable! To worthily celebrate the event, 3 Fiat G46s met at Ceresara, flying in formation (for the first time in 70 years), on 2 June 2022!

Heather “Lucky” Penney was born at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona in 1974 to father John Penney a retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel. John flew during the Vietnam War and later became a commercial pilot for United Airlines. Penney got her pilot’s license at 18. When she was in college at Purdue University, she learned that women were not allowed to be fighter pilots. Although in 1993 they opened combat aviation to women, Penney didn’t learn about the change until she was in graduate school. In 1996, she applied and was accepted at the District of Columbia Air National Guard and then two years later she was commissioned as an Air Force officer. She went to Texas to begin her undergraduate pilot training. That is where she earned her nickname “Lucky”. She among the first wave of U.S. female fighter pilots. On September 11, 2001, Penney and Colonel Marc “Sass” Sasseville were chosen for a dangerous fatal mission. Penney was just a first lieutenant serving as a training officer with the 121st Fighter Squadron of the District of Columbia Air National Guard, based at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington when she was told to intercept United Airlines Flight 93, which was believed to be headed to the U.S. Capitol, at whatever cost. There wasn’t enough time to outfit their aircraft with live ammunition so there only option was to ram the airplane. That would mean sacrificing their lives. At the time, Penney didn’t realize that there was a chance that her father could be the pilot of that flight, but when asked if that would have changed her mind about her mission, she said it wouldn’t have changed it. However, the brave heroic passengers fought back against the hijackers and during the fight the plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. She went on to fly two combat tours in Iraq and eventually took a job at Lockheed Martin, where she worked to communicate between engineers, programs and Air Force customers. Today, she’s a Senior Fellow at the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies, and works on defense policy, research and analysis.
She’s also a mom to two girls. And she still flies.

Luciano Sorlini spa entered the aeronautical sector in the early 1980s, following the family's passion for flying which Silvia, daughter of Luciano and President of the Company, still shares today with the same intensity. Born in Brescia in 1925, Luciano has dedicated himself, since he was a boy, model aircraft by attending the courses organized by RUNA. In the early 1960s, he gave up flying to devote himself to an enterprise of his own, leaving the family business and founding a plant for the production of explosives for civilian use, Explo. In 1980 the old interest in flying reappears and he buys the Beech Bonanza A36TC I-LSBV (in the collection), and his passion is such that it becomes a real company for general aviation. The adventure began in 1981: overhaul of engines and components in the Carzago workshop and overhaul of airframes in the Montegaldella workshop. Luciano was a visionary, a man of many interests, among other things he also raced some editions of the Mille Miglia, in the years when it was not just a historical re-enactment, it can be said that he had three great passions in his life: women, planes and art. Generally speaking he loved Beauty. He has always had great esteem and consideration for women. Art has been decisive in his life: in the 1960s he began to frequent Venice, he was fascinated by it and took over the palace on the Grand Canal, formerly the home of the Grimani family. From the same property he later acquired the Castle of Montegalda in Vicenza. Many know Luciano Sorlini Spa, not only for the marketing and assistance of the entire Rotax galaxy for aviation, but also for the workshops specialized in maintenance and restoration, and for the Flying Museum, whose planes, all in perfect flying condition, mostly come from Luciano Sorlini's personal collection. Thanks to the commitment and considerable economic efforts, an organization was set up, unique of its kind in Italy and among the first in Europe, capable of dealing with periodic maintenance and overhauls of general aviation aircraft, engines and their components and equipment and the sale of any spare parts. Linda Sollar’s love affair with aviation was born as a young girl reading Snoopy and the Red Baron and watching movies like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, she realised at that young age that she belonged in the sky. In the 70s this was easier said than done, aviation was and still is a male-dominated world but Linda wasn’t about to let her dream die. While in high school Linda approached her career counsellor with the revelation that she wanted to be a pilot, but the answer she received was not what she wanted. The counsellor told her that she should apply as a stewardess as girls couldn’t become pilots. Linda believes she was wrong for the right reasons as the first woman to fly for major US airlines was 1973, and the military only started with a few women flying in the 70s but not as the more publicized fighter pilots until the 90s. In 1985, while Linda was working on her Masters of Business Administration in Finance, one of her professors had mentioned he had a small plane that he flew out of the local airport. It had never occurred to Linda that one could just choose to fly and do it. She drove down to the airport that day, took an introductory lesson, and has been flying ever since. Linda having previously met James and Mike, the owners of Sling Aircraft and had the opportunity to fly their low wing aircraft, both of which made a very positive impression on her, decided to order a Sling High Wing and complete the build herself with the assistance of the Sling Factory in Johannesburg. Linda's Sling High Wing would become the first production built High Wing in the world. Flightline had the honour to meet this remarkable lady at an EAA event held at Krugersdorp Airfield where Linda and her husband Gordon were flown to the field by Derek Hopkins and Mike Puzey in their Vans RV8s. Linda and Gordon are planning on flying her newly completed Sling HW from South Africa to the EAA AirVenture at Oshkosh later this year, we wish you all the best on your future journeys and thank you for flying the South African flag high all around the world.

Curti Company has decades of experience in the production of complex parts for certified helicopters. Matching state-of-the-art materials and technology with the passion for flying deeply rooted in the company’s DNA, Zefhir represents the perfect synthesis between competence and intuition. Zefhir is one-of-a-kind; a jewel by Curti Aerospace Division. A unique turbine helicopter, designed to become the go-to brand for the air mobility needs of the future. Zefhir is a unique technology, and is the first helicopter in the world to be fitted with an innovative ballistic parachute rescue system. Installed above the main rotor, the parachute is designed as a backup for conditions where autorotation cannot be performed, such as flight control failure or loss of manoeuvrability; flying over an area where emergency landing cannot be performed safely; flight conditions that prevent restoring rotor rotation speed. The system was successfully tested for the first time in aviation history at Oristano-Fenosu Airport in June 2018. During the test, the helicopter reached forward flight at 30 knots above 300 meters of altitude. The engine was then deliberately turned off to simulate its failure. The helicopter’s descent speed stabilized at less than 7.5 m/s (27 km/h). The ground impact resulted in deceleration peaks well within those required for the safeguarding of human life, as routinely assessed in crash tests for the aeronautic and automotive industries. The system is in fact designed to save the crew’s lives, not necessarily the airframe. The parachute canopy was fully deployed in about 6 seconds, leading to a minimum deployment altitude of 150 meters (450ft). The system is designed to be deployed even at the maximum forward speed. Thanks to an innovative rotor brake, the quick stop of the rotors after the engine stop determines a quite immediate passage from forward flight to vertical fall, at the same time avoiding the wash-down effect of the main rotor blades, which could slow down the deployment of the canopy. The helicopter lands with the engine and rotor fully stopped: a condition that helps to prevent dangerous situations for the crew and for the potentially involved third parties. Designed following EASA CS-27 specifications, the crashworthy seats and landing gear pair ergonomic comfort with extra safety. If you can, auto-rotate. But if you can’t, the parachute will save your life! Attention to detail, passion for beauty, creativity beyond imagination. Zefhir is a jewel of modern technology and materials, right down to its elegant lines and exclusive style interiors.

Hill Helicopters is the world's first truly private helicopter. Hill Helicopters is designing the striking HX50 from the component level up. In addition to designing a futuristic and glamorous-looking airframe, the manufacturer is developing its own 500-horsepower turbine engine (the GT50) to power the aircraft, and creating its own avionics suite (the Hill Digital Cockpit). Hill Helicopters' mission is to fully disrupt the general aviation market with a revolutionary aircraft design. Technology has advanced so much since light helicopters were last being designed that it is now possible to build a turbine engine that offers high performance at a reasonable price point – this is one of the reasons behind Hill’s decision to go this route. Piston and diesel engines were researched, but were found to be lacking. Have a look at why other types of engines proved unsuitable, and what led to the opportunity to deliver a modern, electronically controlled, efficient small turbine.

Skfly Technologies designs, builds and sells electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (E-VTOL) which, initially, will be targeting the general aviation market (GA). The Axe is the go-to training aircraft to deliver effective pilot training to facilitate the rising demand for E-VTOL aircraft pilots. With the aircrafts 2-seat side by side layout, the aircraft is perfectly suited for training new pilots. The cost of running electric aircraft is cheaper than piston or turbine aircraft. Electric motors have fewer moving parts, require less maintenance, and cheap(er) electricity means costs may fall by more than half of existing piston and turbine alternatives. The Permit to Fly regime offers more flexibility on costs and means that the Axe can be maintained and inspected, and have their Permits to Fly renewed annually, by the Light Aircraft Association. Flight training organisations are not tied into expensive service centres. The aircraft is fitted with a removable battery module which enables you to continue flying, even when the main battery has run out. This enables you to have shorter charge times on your main battery pack and quicker turnaround times on the ground. If equipped with a hybrid generator, your training aircraft is capable of competing with existing piston training alternatives. Furthermore, with removable wings, the Axe can be transported on a trailer, giving flight training organisations ultimate flexibility on where they train students. Multiple motors enable you to have redundancy in critical flight phases. If one motor fails – you can still fly safely. Compared to a single engine helicopter where there is only a single source of power, distributed propulsion is a proven safety feature. Furthermore, brushless electric motors compared to conventional piston or turbine engines have far fewer moving parts and critical components that can fail. Finally, with the Axe you can glide like a fixed wing in emergencies and have the back-up of a ballistic parachute. The Axe features 8 brushless motors with 2 per wing end. The two motors are in a single housing and both power single shaft allowing for redundancy in the motor unit. The duplex motor will produce 70 KW peak power, 50kw continuous power with a max thurst available of around 700 kg (1,400 lbs). Working with Rotron the Axe features an optional hybrid generator system to extend the range of the aircraft by charging the batteries as the aircraft flies. The Rotron rotary engine delivers an efficient and reliable solution. The hybrid unit will increase endurance by up to 2 hours, providing 50kw of continuous power with only a 55 kg all-up weight penalty.

Wingcopter is a German manufacturer of eVTOL, fixed-wing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and provider of drone delivery services, focused on optimizing medical supply chains, as well as last-mile logistics of packages, tools, spare parts, food, and groceries. The 120-strong team is dedicated to improving and saving lives worldwide through meaningful commercial and humanitarian applications. Thanks to its patented tilt-rotor mechanism and software algorithms, the Wingcopter 198 can take off and land vertically like a multicopter, while flying long distances as efficiently and quickly as a fixed-wing aircraft, even in rain and strong winds. 12,000 Wingcopters for world’s largest commercial drone deployment - Continental Drones and Wingcopter to transform African supply chains and logistics from the ground up May 19, 2022, Accra, Ghana / Weiterstadt, Germany — German drone delivery pioneer Wingcopter and Continental Drones Ltd., a subsidiary of Ghana- and Dubai-based Atlantic Trust Holding, have signed a partnership agreement to help establish drone-based delivery networks with thousands of Wingcopter drones across the African continent. These networks will dramatically improve the reliability and efficiency of existing supply chains but also help create completely new ones. The companies today announced that Continental Drones has become a Wingcopter Authorized Partner (WAPP) for all 49 sub-Saharan countries. Over the next five years, the goal of the two partners is to deploy 12,000 Wingcopter 198, the world's most advanced delivery drone, throughout Africa, making it the largest commercial deployment in the global delivery drone industry to date. In many African regions, insufficient infrastructure is one of the biggest barriers to universal health coverage and economic development. Setting up large-scale drone delivery networks across African airspace will propel logistics in these countries to a new level and help build an entirely new transport framework - much faster, cheaper, more sustainable, and more efficient than the development of conventional ground-based infrastructure with all its unhealthy and climate-damaging emissions. Bridging the infrastructure gap through the deployment of large fleets of Wingcopter drones, even in the most remote places, will allow governments and the private sector to leapfrog inefficient infrastructure to climate-neutral, reliable, and fast logistic capabilities. Wingcopter’s technology will be deployed to improve the livelihoods of millions of African people, for example through the on-demand delivery of medicines, vaccines, or laboratory samples but also essential goods for daily use. In addition, it has the potential to turbocharge the economic development of the countries in which the Wingcopter networks will be established by connecting communities more effectively and by creating thousands of new job opportunities to operate these delivery networks. As the Wingcopter 198 is fully electric, it contributes to a more sustainable African logistics sector and help move economies towards net zero emissions. “Together with Wingcopter, we are committed to accelerate the development and economic integration of Africa by enabling the creation of drone-based delivery networks across the continent. With our longstanding business experience on the ground and Wingcopter's best-in-class drone technology, these networks offer a real chance to fuel economic development and help improve the livelihood of millions. African nations show true leadership by implementing this cutting-edge technology for the better of their people and generations to come”, comments Alexander Asiedu, Founder of Continental Drones and Chairman of Atlantic Trust Holding. Tom Plümmer, Co-Founder and CEO of Wingcopter, adds: “This agreement and trustful partnership is a real game-changer, positioning Wingcopter and Continental Drones at the top of the drone delivery industry. Wingcopter is well positioned to execute against the tremendous opportunity of drone delivery in the next decade. We are convinced that our cooperation with Alex and his Continental Drones team will unlock the African drone delivery market on a large scale, allowing us to jointly improve and save millions of lives.” Wingcopter is a WEF Technology Pioneer. Wingcopter’s investors include Xplorer Capital, Futury Capital, ITOCHU, DRONE FUND, SYNERJET, Expa, Hessen Kapital III, and Corecam Capital Partners.
